Redundancy and Entropy

Redundancy - something common and predictable
Entropy - something new and unpredictable

An obvious example would be the difference between Pixar and Dreamworks which both are animation studio.

Pixar is known for their heartwarming stories and often comes out new idea which are rarely seen on any other animation film. Their story are meaningful and contain depth and they are able to make a connection between the characters in the movie and audience. Their moral of the story are able to impact on people's life like Wall-E, teaching people to appreciate Earth resources. Most of their stories are out of the box which make it memorable for people. I can still remember clearly the whole story of Toy Story which is one of my favourite animated films of all time because it made me believe toys are alive when i first saw the movie. Besides that, I can even watch Pixar movies over and over again without getting bored. Pixar films rarely get sequels except for Toy Story and Cars unlike Dreamworks. Moreover, Pixar only release one film annually which they have more time to produce higher quality of work compared to Dreamworks.

In contrast of Pixar, Dreamworks's films are more lighthearted compared to Pixar's film which contain more drama and touching moment. Dreamworks release at least two movies annually, which can become a little bit overwhelming and tired of their presence because most of the stories are based on story book and pretty much predictable just by looking at their trailers or posters.Their movies has become a norm, content is not fresh enough because most of their characters are based on animals, featuring celebrities as the voice for the characters. Moreover, Dreamworks keep making movies with sequels, making their franchise boring like Shrek. Their moral and message of the story are lack of depth and I've noticed their moral of the story in the movies are mostly just based on friendship. Even though their stories and characters are not original enough, however there is one thing that can make Dreamworks stands out from Pixar is their humor and satire, their stories contain more laughter compared to Pixar.

Each of them has their own uniqueness, but what I think the most important in animation film is the content and the message. Overall, I think people need to keep reinventing themselves in order to produce fresh idea.

  1. Yo shireen. Gonna comment on this post cause its awesome.

About the redundancy and entropy aspect that you have taken on to compare both digital animation industries, I could also conclude that Disney Pixar also practice a certain amount of redundancy when making their animation films. For example, their script are usually always limited and safe compared to the jokes and hidden innuendos Dreamworks' Films has. People also expect high quality and high standards when a Pixar movie premieres, therefore making it blockbuster. However, when that redundancy aspect is not met, for example 'Cars 2', its movie spins into a whirlwind like all the other Dreamworks movies. Dreamworks could also be quite entropical when it comes to their movies as they do not base their storyline so much on life values and more on random lifestyles.

(gerry hitting my head with a bolster repeatedly I cannot think. Sry if this comment is retarded)

  2. Actually both Pixar and Dreamworks did pretty well in terms of the characteristic. However,I agreed that Dreamworks stories does not include moral values in it but their stories always beyond expectation with full of crazy ideas which is unpredictable.

The thing that impressed me about Dreamwork's production is they able to bring laughter to the audience because the emotions of the character. People don't really care about the storyline while they watching a movie. What makes an animation interesting is the drawing itself. It depends on how well you can perform a characteristic of a character.

Although the characters used in their animation mostly include animals but people always expect something unique and attractive from the animation. From this point of view, they made it. You see is not common to see animals talking in real life but only sound. I don't find out is boring if they always use animals as the characters because they always provide different kind of story lines with different culture in it. Check out the newest Dreamworks production - Epic. The epicness of the storyline really suits the theme itself. haha! Let's watch after the movie has been release!

    1. Well..Dreamworks are able to bring laughter to the audience with the emotions of the character but I have to disagree with your opinion about the importance of storyline because the main selling point of a movie is storyline. No matter how advance the CGI effect is, if the storyline is bad people will not find it interesting and not going to watch it. For example, Battleship, their story is just a typical alien invasion with massive CGI effect like Transformers. Although they made tons of money but the reviews are generally bad because of their storyline.

      Awesome trailer!

  3. I would agreed that storyline is important for the reality movies. As for animation is important to have a strong storyline as well but still the audience will always focus on the colours, movement and emotions of the character itself. What if an animation with a fascinating storyline but bad drawings on the character? Everything is drawn in animation. That's why they can go beyond expectation. But for the reality movies, they only able to use camera to shoot with some CGI effect add ons. There's not much colour attraction or characteristic had been brought out but only dynamite scene. So it solely looks like a typical normal movies.

But still I would agreed your opinion. It's still important to have a great storyline!

    Peace out!

  5. Yea !I totally agree with you! I myself loves Pixar movies, they are more family based, as a morale in it that lets the audience remembers it. The storyline of their movies are new and rare that catch the attention of the audience. while for dreamworks many of their movies uses talkable animal which seems weird to me. But still dreamworks movies as enlightening and funny! are I myself prefers pixar more , their story caught me attention. Even their short film are so interesting!
